1 John 4:12 No one has ever seen God. If we love each other, God remains in us and his love is made perfect in us.
As the church, we are not just called to come in and worship, we are also called to go out and serve. At Sylvan Hills United Methodist Church we take this call very seriously. We believe that God is at work here in Sherwood and it is up to us to get out there and be a part of it! Check out some of our ongoing missions below!
Join us on the first Thursday of every month for a free wellness clinic. Each month we offer free blood pressure, blood sugar, and basic health screenings along with access to a doctor. Every month also offers a special emphasis, whether it be cholesterol, vision, hearing or immunizations. Check out our calendar to stay up to date on this month's focus. A free meal is also offered every month.
First Sunday Food Collection
On the first Sunday of each month we collect food to be donated to an area food pantry. This correlates with our monthly celebration of communion, Christ's holy meal, because in that food we are reminded that every table is holy and needs to be filled. In 2015 we provided 2,250 lbs. of food and paper products to an area food pantry. Our goal in 2016 is 3,000 lbs. of food and paper products.
We have put together a database of information for the assistance based resources around our region. This database is available to churches who would like access and to anyone who calls or visits our office for assistance. Our team is also available during the Wellness Clinic on the first Thursday of every month from 4 to 7 p.m.
Meals on Wheels
Every week volunteers from our church and community take meals to those in our community who need a warm plate of food and a kind face to talk to. We are always looking for new volunteers, so let us know if you would like to be a part of this ministry.
Sylvan Hills Elementary School Partner in Education
Throughout the year we work to support Sylvan Hills Elementary through gathering school supplies in the fall, warm clothes in the winter, snacks for those who come to school hungry, and support for those kids who need an extra hand. If you would like to be a part of this ongoing partnership, please call the office for more information.
In Fall of 2014 we got to digging and started our community garden. This garden is an educational tool for our school and community, along with a working garden that provides fresh produce to our neighbors and church. If you have a green thumb or wish that you did, stop on by and volunteer.
In January of 2015 and January of 2016, a group of adults traveled to Sager Brown Distribution Center in Baldwin, LA to help get disaster relief packs ready for their destinations. We are also going on a mission trip to the Rice and Beans Ministry in Costa Rica in 2016.
Prayer Shawl Ministry
Our Prayer Shawl Ministry creates shawls, blankets, and prayer squares for those who need an extra reminder of God's love. These items are prayed over and then go out to those who are hurting, grieving, or just need an extra squeeze in life.
Our Antioch UMW Circle takes groups from SHUMC to the Rice Depot every few months to help sort, gather, clean, and ready food for soup kitchens, food pantries, and homes across the state.
Brother Paul's Soup Kitchen
Through out the year we offer support to the Brother Paul's Soup Kitchen, but in the summer we really get our hands dirty. From June through August every Monday a group of all ages from SHUMC heads over to Brother Paul's Soup Kitchen to help prepare lunches for men, women, and children in the North Little Rock Community.
